Five Simple Ways to Nourish Yourself

Here are five ways to engage in self-care. Pick one or two (or more). Give yourself the self-love you deserve and that you’re worthy of every single day of the year.

1. Say It Like You Mean It: Positive affirmations fuel your emotional state. It can be something as simple as: “I’m Worth It,” “I Deserve Happiness,” or “I Choose Life.” Write a handful of positive affirmations down on small slips of paper, fold up the paper, and place them in a pretty box. The next time you need an emotional boost, pull one out and read it aloud (and say it like you mean it!)

2. A Full Plate: Decide that just for today, you’re going to nourish your body with healthy food. Steam up a plate of broccoli; chop up some fresh fruit (or opt for a smoothie); or whip up some lentil burgers. Notice how you feel after a healthy meal, as opposed to how you feel after consuming large amounts of sugar and caffeine. You might start making eating well a habit!

3. Write On: Keeping a journal gives you an opportunity to unplug and recharge by putting your feelings down on paper. Try writing in your non-dominant hand to see how your inner-child feels. Or, write for five minutes without stopping for a stream of consciousness.

4. Puppy Love: Give your inner-child a big hug. If you weren’t fortunate enough to choose your inner child at The Bridge (and, no, it doesn’t have to be a stuffed puppy), it’s not too late to rescue your inner child now. Find a cuddly stuffed animal that resonates with you and keep it by your side anytime you’re feeling down.

5. Tune Up: It might sound corny, but sing a song. Whether it’s the Beatles or Bon Jovi, the theme to your favorite Broadway musical, or a lullaby that sticks out in your mind, just sing. Singing can relieve stress and bring out your younger self. So, just sing – sing it soft, sing it loud, or sing it on- or even off-key.
