What Is Family‑of‑Origin Trauma?
Your family of origin is the household that raised you. Trauma shows up when that place—meant to be safe—teaches you that love is conditional or that danger is normal.
Sometimes the injury is clear: abuse, addiction, abandonment. Other times it hides in constant criticism, icy silence, or tip‑toeing around someone’s anger.
Public‑health studies reveal nearly two‑thirds of U.S. adults have lived through at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE), and multiple ACEs sharply raise the risk of depression, anxiety, and later substance misuse. Left untreated, these hurts can echo down the line—a pattern called intergenerational trauma.
